Over the years T&P has designed and manufactured various tooling for the food and drug packaging industry. One of our latest innovative achievements is the fabrication of a high speed male/female rotary punch unit to cleanly punch out shaker lids for a packaging converter in the Midwest. This innovative converter has been a customer of T&P's for many years and approached us with this packaging application. The engineers at T&P, working closely with the customer's technical staff, developed a workable design that could be produced utilizing rotary punching technology and would fulfill our customer's requirements. The concept is an innovative, two piece shaker lid for individual, single use packages that can be used for spices, seasonings, condiments, confections and non-food applications such as hygiene and beauty care products. The initial application was for a large, national pizza chain that required individual, disposable, tamper resistant packages for seasoning and parmesan cheese. The first design incorporated two different lids, both with round holes. The first lid had 3/32" holes and the second had 5/32" holes. Subsequent lid designs allowed for a combination of holes and a spout for pouring. All of these designs were accomplished by merely changing the punches and dies in the original unit. Several obstacles were overcome in achieving a satisfactory design, i.e.: finding a way to hold clusters of nine punches placed in such close proximity. This problem was overcome by using a patented "punch cluster" design in which all nine punches are held in one punch holder. The punch holder is then fitted into the punch cylinder as an assembly. This particular unit contained 120 "punch clusters", each containing nine punches, for a total of 1080 punched holes per revolution. All of this was achieved within a 16" web.
Our customer is now marketing their shaker lids to the food, condiment, medical and cosmetic industries. This convenient single-serve package has many potential uses, and Tools & Production is proud to have been a part in developing this innovative new product.
